wild minds in the dark
It’s 1977 in San Francisco, and a young immigrant follows his poetry into the shadows, searching for a deeper connection in life. By exploring fear, cultural memory, and consciousness, he is able to unearth reality just enough to reveal his truth.
... this is our inquiry of everything that haunts us as a people.

an otherwise experience
We all have ghosts. A beautiful multi-sensory, art-theater experience, MUMU is a celebration of death and a meditation of our darker selves. MUMU resurrects the ritual of evocation and explores the textures of fear through a 90-minute interweaving of dance, soundscape, light, and poetry.
mumu
MUMU (pronounced “mu-moh”, Tagalog for “ghost”) summons the forgotten spirit of candlelit gravesite griots, who held storytelling ceremonies on All Souls Day in the Philippines. MUMU brings these stories back to Bindlestiff Studio—the nation’s only theater dedicated to showcasing Filipino American performing arts, located in the heart of the South of Market, affectionately known as SOMA Pilipinas, the recently designated Filipino Cultural Heritage District by the State of California. All Soul’s Day in our history is not a day of mourning; in the homeland, it is a day to gather, remember, and celebrate. We invite you to commune with our ghosts at MUMU.
